Mac Engel enters his third season as a Chiefs’ goaltender with 86 career appearances and a 41-27-3-4 record. In 2011-12, Engel went 28-19-1-3. His 28 wins were 10th in the WHL. He made 18 saves in a 3-0 shutout win over the Seattle Thunderbirds on February 19th, 2012 for his fifth career shutout. Engel made a season high 47 saves in a 4-3 shootout loss to Portland on May 1st, 2012. In 2010-11, Engel finished the regular season as the WHL’s second leading goaltender with a 2.30 GAA. He had won his last eight starts in the regular season. Engel was named the WHL’s Goaltender of the Month for February as he posted a 9-2-0-0 record with two shut-outs, a 1.83 GAA and .930 save percentage. In his last 11 starts he was 10-1-0-0 with a 1.27 GAA, a .950 save percentage and three shutouts. Engel appeared in 15 straight games, including starts in the last 13, from January 22nd through February 21st. His first career shutout came on January 26th, 2011 with 18 saves in a 3-0 win over the Everett Silvertips. His four shutouts equaled James Reid’s franchise rookie record. He was listed by the Chiefs on November 7th, 2009. Engel helped lead the Red Deer Optimists to the 2010 AMHL championship with a 6-0 record and 1.21 goals against in the playoffs. He finished sixth in the league with a 2.43 GAA. He also posted a .913 save percentage.
