MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT TO DROP PUCK AT CHIEFS HOME OPENER

SPOKANE NATIVE TO BE RECOGNIZED AT CENTER ICE PRIOR TO GAME ON SEPT 28

Monday, Sep 16, 2013

SPOKANE, Wash. - Medal of Honor recipient Army Staff Sergeant Ty M. Carter will participate in the ceremonial puck drop and opening night ceremonies at Bud Light Opening Night on September 28, as the Spokane Chiefs host the Tri-City Americans at Spokane Arena. Carter, a Spokane native, received the nation’s highest military decoration for his heroism during one of the most intense battles of the Afghanistan war.

On October 3, 2009, Carter was one of 53 soldiers stationed at COP Keating, located in a valley in the Kamdesh District, Nuristan Province of Afghanistan. Nearly 300 enemy insurgents, armed with automatic rifles and rocket-propelled grenades, surrounded the outpost and began their assault. During the battle, Carter sprinted through a heavy enemy fire to resupply ammunition, check on fellow Soldiers and secure a radio that later proved critical to saving the team. Then, unarmed, he also rescued a fellow wounded Soldier and carried him to safety amidst the withering gunfire.

Carter was born in Spokane in 1980, moved away in 1981 and returned with his family in 1991, ultimately graduating from North Central High School in 1998. He is currently stationed as a U.S. Army staff noncommissioned officer with the 7th Infantry Division at Joint Base Lewis-McChord near Tacoma, Wash. He lives with his wife, Shannon and their three children.

Bud Light Opening Night, the home opener for the Spokane Chiefs 2013-14 regular season, is set for Saturday, September 28. Game time is 7:05 p.m. and opening night ceremonies are expected to begin at 6:50 p.m.
