Spokane Chiefs forward Mitch Holmberg has signed an amateur tryout contract (ATO) with the Oklahoma City Barons of the American Hockey League, affiliate of the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers.

Holmberg, from Sherwood Park, Alberta, recently finished a WHL career with the Chiefs during which he broke the franchise record for career goals scored with 147. His 62 goals during the 2013-14 regular season were the most in the WHL and just the 3rd time since 2000 that a WHL player has scored 60 or more. He also led the league in power play goals with 23.

Holmberg was awarded the Bob Clarke Trophy as the league’s top regular season scorer in 2013-14, with 118 points in 72 games played.

Along with the career goals record, Holmberg approached franchise marks in games played (314, 8th), assists (149, 12th), and points (296, 5th). He finished his career with 41 playoff games played (t-16th), scoring 20 goals and adding 9 assists.
