CHIEFS LOSE 7-2 IN GAME 1 AT PORTLANDApr 05, 2013 - 17:23 PDT
The Portland Winterhawks scored 5 unanswered goals to snap a 2-2 tie and skate to a 7-2 win over the Spokane Chiefs Friday night in game 1 of their Western Conference semi-final series at the Memorial Coliseum in Portland, OR.
Taylor Leier's goal 5:46 into the game gave Portland a 1-0 lead. The Chiefs would even the contest while the two teams were skating 4 on 4 when Mike Aviani converted a Brenden Kichton pass net front at 9:04 of the first. Aviani's fourth goal of the playoffs was also assisted by Reid Gow. Portland's Oliver Bjorkstrand scored 4:05 into the second period to give the Winterhawks a 2-1 advantage. Spokane would pull back even again on Todd Fiddler's shorthanded goal at 7:23 of the second. Kichton and Dylan Walchuk assisted on Fiddler's third goal of the post season. Portland would get goals from Bjorkstrand and Derrick Pouliot in the final 5:16 of the second to take a 4-2 lead to the third period.
The Winterhawks Ty Rattie would score a natural hat trick at :47, 5:28 and 16:23 of the third period to cap the Hawks 7-2 win. Spokane outshot Portland 40-39 while going 0-3 on the power play. Portland went 2-8 on the power play. The two teams will meet in game two in the series Saturday night at the Rose Garden. Mike Boyle will have the call on 1510 KGA beginning with the pre-game show at 6:30pm and the puck drop at 7:05pm.
